Both types of scans give detailed, digital images of the body.

A CAT or CT scan produces images that look like slices thru the body part being studied. The computer analyzes the slices and creates a 3-D picture of the body part.

An MRI Scan captures digital images of the body using the magnetic field from each and every cell in the body. It can detect very small changes in structure and function of an organ system.

Both are extremely valuable and many times, both are done to give the doctor a more complete picture. X-rays are also widely used and can detect hard tissue like bone, but the CT or MRI can detect soft-tissue problems.

If you want more technical infor regarding these tests, just Google them or check webMD.
